Special Meeting, Sunday, May 2

A special meeting of the congregation will be held this coming Sunday, May 2, following worship.

The purpose of the meeting is to receive - and make decisions about the recommendations of the Joint Search Committee for the ministry of our church following the retirement of David on June 30.

Everyone is urged to attend and participate, but this meeting is one in which only members of Capilano United Church may vote.

Worship in Song, May 2

Sing A New Song

This coming Sunday, May 2, we will worship through song as we sample the beautiful and inspiring songs in our new More Voices hymn books.

Lorraine Toljanich worships at First United when she is visiting in Kelowna and has talked with their Music Director about the songs that their favourites. So we'll survey those first - and perhaps also include a few "goldie oldies" from Voices United as well.

There will be no Sunday School May 2 as we hope the children will enjoy being part of the singing.

Gardening Work Party, Saturday, May 1

My apologies for the short notice, but I was wondering if it would be possible to have a garden work party at the Church this Saturday (May 1) from 10:00 – 1:00 (or any part of it).

Three big jobs we would like to address initially are:
a) Removal of the two large fir trees next to the stairs down to the C.E. Centre.
b) Removal of some of the larger shrubs that are directly in front of the Church (between main front door and East side door)
c) Loading of more dirt along flower bed on Philip Street.

Jan Kocaba has a chain saw to do the big cutting, but we also need something smaller to cut the trees down into manageable sizes. Maybe a ‘Limb and Trim’ or anything similar; and some ‘loppers’? Jan also has a trailer that we can use to load the cut up branches into.

So this will require some physical strength so this invitation goes out to all the good strong youth that we have. Any takers?

Also, if anyone has any large boulders (approximately 1 foot in size) in their garden that they would like to get rid of, then we have a place for them. We need these to help build up the base of the flower bed on Philip. They will help retain the soil that we will be placing there. If anyone has these, but has no transportation, just give me call and I would be happy to pick them up for you.  You’re welcome to drop them off next to that wall at any time this week.

So if you are able to help in manpower and/or tools (including shovels), could you please contact me as soon as possible?

Hope for Haiti, Sunday, April 11, 10:30am

A member of our congregation, Linda Warner, has just returned from Haiti after volunteering for 2 weeks.

She went with a Pediatric Team to provide health care for the children of Haiti.

Come hear her story, see her photos, and share in her amazing experience.

This presentation is for the whole community.

There will be no worship this Sunday as we give our whole attention to the people of Haiti.

Linda's presentation will be in the church building at 10:30am. Coffee and conversation afterwards.

Upcoming Worship Services - Date Correction!

March 28 – The Last Supper. We’ll re-enact the last meal Jesus ate with his disciples following a modified form of the traditional Jewish Passover Seder celebration.
Oops. I incorrectly initially posted this for the last DAY in March, instead of the last SUNDAY. Sorry if you were hoping to catch this on Wednesday. We had a great service, but it was yesterday, the 28th.

April 2 – Good Friday. We’ll worship at St. David’s as we ponder the terrible tragedy of this day. Worship at St. David’s is at 10:00am.

April 4 – Easter Sunday. The most happy of days as we celebrate the power of God’s love to defeat even death.

And here’s a special opportunity …

March 31, 2:00pm – Photo Op – The North Shore News will do a story and photo about our neighbourhood garage sale. We are looking for 6 to 10 people to be in the photo with items for sale. Please let Dianna Wilson know if you can be there. It should take about half and hour.

Opening for New Minister, July 1, 2010

Capilano United Church is seeking a new minister,  effective July 1, 2010.

The position is a full-time, two year appointment with the goal of assisting the congregation to develop a vision and plan for its future. Click here for the position description.

Annual Meeting, February 21, 2010

The Annual Meeting of Capilano United Church will be held following worship on Sunday, February 21, 2010. Business will include receiving reports for 2009 including the financial report, election of Board members, committees and Trustees, and approving the budget for 2010.

This is an important meeting at this time in the life of the congregation, so please plan to come and be part of the discussion and decisions.

Congregation Meeting, Jan. 31

A special meeting of the congregation of Capilano United will be held following worship on Sunday, January 31, 2010 for the purpose of receiving and acting on the report of the Joint Needs Assessment Committee regarding the future ministry of Capilano United. Printed copies of the JNAC report will be available at worship, January 24 and 31.

Everyone is reminded that only those who have been formally received as members of Capilano United are eligible to vote.

The Church Office and any Board Member (Marion Sebastion, Carol Sawyer, Laurel Coard, Jan Kocaba, Sandi McIntosh-Kocaba) has the record of who is listed in our Membership Roll. Please contact them if you are uncertain of your membership status.

And please request to become a member if that is your desire. The Board will meet following worship on January 24 to consider all requests received.

If you have ever been a member of any church before, the practice of the United Church of Canada is simply to receive you as a member of Capilano as a “Transfer.” If you have never been a member of any church before, then we ask that you indicate that you indeed are wanting to be a member of Capilano United. Please contact me directly about this and I will explain in more detail what is involved.

Office Closed for Christmas

There will be no worship at Capilano United on Sunday, December 27th. We encourage everyone to join the folks at St. David's United. Note that St. David's worship is at 10:00 AM.

The minister, David Ewart, will be away on vacation December 27 to January 2. Please contact him at his cell number if there is an emergency.

The Capilano United Church office will be closed until the New Year, January, 5, 2010.
